Alchemy of Luck

Alchemy of Luck

“Alchemy of Luck”
Back in the 80’s I had a night job working security for the Grand Traverse Band at Leelanau Sands Casino. I did stained glass in my studio by day, and security by night. I spent a lot of time by the front door, and as players were coming in or out I could overhear their conversations.
I started jotting down the things I heard about their luck, good or bad. By the end of the night I had enough of a list to begin sketching. I drew first with pencil, then with ink.
These are the phrases I overheard: “I feel like I’ve been kicked in the ribs.”-“Tell me another bleeding heart story.” -“That sure was a snakey hand.”-“Feel like I’m skating on thin ice!”-“The eagle flies on Friday.”-“Wearing a poker face.”-“Feel like I’m ‘dragon’ tonight.”-“Man, I sure stirred up the luck.” See if you can find them… 🐉
As I reached the end of the list, I decided to fill the background with the symbols and signs, retorts and beakers, of the Alchemist’s lair. I eventually added                                                                        watercolor and acrylic, and this piece became, “The Alchemy of Luck.”
